Eastvale Water Authority: Hydrant Flushing in the North District, September 8–19
Crews will flush fire hydrants in the North District between 8:00 A.M. and 3:00 P.M. on weekdays from September 8 to 19. Flushing removes sediment that settles in water mains over time, and it allows our crews to confirm that each hydrant operates properly. During and shortly after flushing in your area, you may notice lower water pressure or slightly discolored water. The water remains safe to drink. If your tap water appears cloudy, run the cold tap for three to five minutes until it clears. We recommend that you avoid doing laundry until the water runs clear, as sediment can stain light-colored fabrics. A street-by-street schedule is posted at eastvalewater.org/flushing. Residents who rely on home medical equipment that needs a steady water supply may call 555-0142 to be notified the day before work begins on their street.
According to the notice, what is one purpose of the flushing?

Council Approves Grants for Historic Storefronts
RIVERMOUTH (February 4) — The Rivermouth Town Council voted on Tuesday to create a grant program that will help owners of older commercial buildings restore their street-facing facades. The Heritage Frontage Fund will provide up to $25,000 per building, covering as much as half the cost of approved work such as repairing original brickwork, replacing damaged windows with historically accurate designs, and removing oversized signs. Only buildings constructed before 1940 in the Harbour Street district are eligible. Owners must hire contractors from a list approved by the town's planning department, and they must keep the improvements in place for at least ten years. Councillor Aiko Tanaka, who proposed the fund, said the program was modeled on a similar effort in the nearby town of Pell Bay. "Five years after Pell Bay started its program, the vacancy rate on its main street had fallen by almost a third," she said. "Visitors want to walk down a street that looks cared for." Applications open on March 1 and will be reviewed in the order in which they are received. The council has set aside $400,000 for the program's first year.

Northshore Energy to Replace Residential Meters
SALTON FALLS (May 6) — Northshore Energy announced yesterday that it will replace all 86,000 residential electricity meters in its service area with digital models over the next eighteen months. —[1]— The new meters send usage readings to the utility automatically, so employees will no longer need to visit homes each month. Customers will receive a letter about two weeks before work is scheduled in their neighborhood. —[2]— Installation usually takes about twenty minutes, and power will be off for only part of that time. Customers do not need to be home unless their meter is located indoors. Once the new meters are in place, customers will be able to view their daily usage on Northshore's Web site. —[3]— The company says this information will help households notice unusually high consumption early instead of discovering it on their monthly bill. Customers who prefer not to have a digital meter may ask to keep their current one. —[4]— Those customers will pay a monthly fee of $9 to cover the cost of manual readings.
