Many universities are considering whether to require all students to complete a certain number of community service hours before graduation. Supporters say that mandatory service builds character and strengthens the connection between universities and their local communities. Critics argue that forcing volunteerism undermines its purpose and places an unfair burden on students who are already managing heavy academic and work schedules. Should universities require community service as a graduation requirement? Why or why not? Use specific reasons and examples, and respond to the ideas in the posts below.
I think universities should absolutely require community service because it teaches students responsibility and empathy in ways that classroom learning alone cannot. Volunteering at local shelters, tutoring programs, or environmental cleanups exposes students to real-world challenges and helps them develop leadership and teamwork skills. Many graduates say that their service experiences were among the most meaningful parts of their education, and employers increasingly value candidates who demonstrate civic engagement.
I do not think community service should be a graduation requirement. The whole point of volunteering is that it is done freely and out of genuine concern for others. When students are forced to complete service hours, many will treat it as just another assignment to check off rather than an opportunity for personal growth. Furthermore, many students already work part-time jobs to pay for tuition and cannot afford to spend additional unpaid hours on mandatory service without sacrificing their studies or financial stability.
