The Great Stink

history of public health
In the hot summer of 1858, the smell of sewage from the River Thames grew so that the episode became known as the Great Stink. At the time, many people believed that diseases such as cholera were spread by bad air, and the stench Parliament, which met beside the river, to act quickly. The engineer Joseph Bazalgette was given the task of designing a new system of sewers that would carry waste from the centre of London. Ironically, the system helped to reduce cholera not because it removed the smell but because it kept sewage out of the water that people drank, the real of the disease.
