Have you ever been introduced to someone and forgotten their name within seconds? If so, you are from alone. According to psychologists, the problem usually has less to do with memory than attention. When we meet someone new, we are often so with making a good impression that we do not really listen when they tell us who they are. One simple technique is to repeat the name loud as soon as you hear it, for example by saying 'Nice to meet you, David.' Another is to the name with a picture. If you meet a woman called Mrs Baker, you might imagine her taking loaves of bread out of an oven. The stranger the picture, the it is to forget. Some people worry that these tricks will make them look odd, but in reality other people are to notice. And if you do forget a name, most people would much rather you admitted it than to know who they are.
