When the old car park behind Hillside Road closed three years ago, nobody knew what would happen to the empty space. Then a group of neighbours the idea of turning it into a garden. At first the local council was not sure, but in the end it the group permission to use the land for one year. Volunteers spent many weekends rid of rubbish and building wooden boxes for vegetables, and by the next summer they were picking their first tomatoes. Today more than sixty families part in the project. Each family looks after a small area, and everyone shares tools, seeds and advice. The garden has also become a place where young and old people get to know each other. ‘Before, I only hello to my neighbours in the street,’ says one member, Dorota Kowalski. ‘Now we have lunch together every Sunday.’ New members are always welcome, and it doesn’t if you have never grown anything before.
